The election determines who succeeds Sepp Blatter who has held the position since 1998. Both Blatter and vice-president, Michel Platini, are on 90-day suspension as Swiss authorities investigate corruption and bribery allegations.
Although Platini is aiming to succeed Blatter, FIFA has insisted it will not recognize his candidacy, neither can he campaign while he is still under suspension. He may however be eligible if his ban is lifted before the date of election.
