First Day In Office: I Met Empty National Treasury - Buhari Laments

In his first day at the Aso Rock Villa since his inauguration, President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday paid a courtesy call on State House correspondents at the Press Gallery, Presidential Villa.

Buhari's meeting with the State House Press Corps was a clear departure from his predecessor, former President Goodluck Jonathan who never met with State House correspondents throughout his over five years as the president.

Buhari said he met virtually an empty treasury, with debts in millions of dollars, with state workers and even federal workers not paid their salaries, noting that it was a disgrace for Nigeria.

He said it was not by accident that he got the best journalist (Femi Adesina) to be his special adviser, one of the 15 aides for whom he had to get clearance from the Senate‎.

“He is one of the best Presidents of the guild that I can have as special advisers.

"I brought one of the best of you so that he can consistently defend me against you,” he said.
