London’s Metropolitan police To Recruit Yoruba Constables

Those aspiring to join London’s Metropolitan police as constables must speak another language, in addition to English, The Guardian of London has reported. The other languages are Arabic, Bengali, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Sinhala (Sri Lanka), Spanish, Turkish or Yoruba.

The newspaper reports that the Scotland Yard is hoping the new criterion, to be test-run for one month, would help police "engage with London’s diverse communities as effectively as possible."

Thousands of Nigerians, most of them Yoruba, live in London and speak the language in their daily activities. According to a recruitment update on the Met’s careers website only those with a second language can submit application to become a police officer.
