The 21-year-old South African recipient recently informed the head of the university’s Division of Urology that his girlfriend was expecting. According to Van der Merwe, the surgery was a success as the recipient is able to stand up, urinate and have intercourse.
Prof Andre van der Merwe said the patient’s partner is about four months pregnant and though he hasn’t seen the woman, they would have to take that as evidence that the transplant worked.

The recipient, who lost his penis due to a botched circumcision, is still under monitoring six months after the delicate nine-hour micro surgery was successfully completed at the Tygerberg Hospital in December last year.
