Hours after two suspected male suicide bombers caused the death of over 30 persons in an attack on a mosque in Maiduguri the Borno State capital.

The city was again attacked early Friday when four suspected female suicide bombers launched a partially foiled attack that left 22 persons, including themselves, dead, security sources and officials said.

Officials said the four women began their journey into Maiduguri through the Maiduguri-Biu Road at about 5am with an attempt to launch multiple attacks on the city.

But their mission was cut short at the outskirts of the city, near the neighbourhood where the Thursday night bombing took place, as soldiers on guard in the area tried to stop them, one official said.

Witnesses said the soldier had to open fire on the women when they failed to obey an order for them to stop advancing towards the city.

“One of the women had to run towards Umarari-Molai village as the soldiers were opening fire on them and she detonated herself; the explosion from her IED device caused the ones being carried by the three others to explode and it unfortunately killed about 18 persons in the village,” said a soldier who declined mentioning his name for obvious jurisdictional concerns.
