Chinese citizens have been outraged following a report that a man made his 60-year-old mother travel in the trunk of the car so that his child could have the whole backseat to sleep.

The family was reportedly traveling with his family on Wednesday when they were stopped on the way for a routine traffic inspection. The man, identified as Mr. Liu, and his wife were seated in the front, while their son was lying on the backseat. Upon inspection, the police discovered an elderly lady inside the trunk.

When they inquired, Liu told them that he had asked his mother to be seated in the trunk so that his son could rest properly on the backseat. Deeming it unsafe, the police asked the lady to evacuate the trunk, and sought to penalize Liu. However, the lady attempted to persuade them to hold back the punishment, arguing that she did not think it was uncomfortable in the trunk.

What’s even more disturbing is the fact that according to the police, Liu’s mother had spent her pension to buy the car for her son. Since pictures of the incident were posted on social media in China, the story has become a viral phenomenon, with angry netizens lashing out at Liu.
