Imo State police command has confirmed the arrest of no fewer than 68 members of Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, for unlawful assemblage and procession.
Disclosing this to newsmen in his office, yesterday, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Austin Evbakhavbokun, said “62 of the figure arrested had been charged to court for conspiracy, belonging to unlawful society and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.”
The commissioner, however, disclosed that the leader of the movement, Chief Ralph Uwazurike, from investigations conducted, was not associated with the group. Evbakhavbokun said that the self-styled freedom fighters had stormed Owerri, the state capital in buses from all directions to celebrate Biafra Day and remembrance of their fallen heroes without previous notice to the police.
“They were clad in MASSOB/Biafra uniforms with varying insignia and marched towards the Port Harcourt-Owerri federal highway, chanting war songs in such a manner as to cause breach of the peace. They were, however, dispersed by the State Police Command,” the commissioner said.
The Imo police boss, who listed exhibits recovered from the suspects as Biafra uniforms, Biafra ID cards, Biafra flags and some buses, regretted that most of those involved in the act never knew when and how the civil war was fought in the country.
He advised parents and guardians to always keep a tab on the activities of their children and wards to discourage them from acts and conducts capable of jeopardizing peace and security in the society.
“We have just one country called Nigeria and we cannot have two flags for the same country,” the commissioner said.

ReplyDeleteThey were they remembering falling hero's and chanting solidarity songs for those who are gone, most of them lost their father and most of them even uncles and some brothers during the war. My father who happens to be alive today caught a bullet from a sub machine gun on his left arm during the war. Is Nigeria not celebrating armed forces remembrance day? People who died in the creek in Niger delta are they not humans.l, those in Niger delta without drinkable water and electricity or good road or farmlands are they not humans. When these people arise and fight for their right, I expect the government to listen and try as much as possible to settle violence without violence as these people are fighting for what they believe. All they need is counselling and provision to their demands no matter how hard it is we are in a democratic government. If I choose not to be part of an association I have all right to disassociate my self from that body or association. What Federal Government should be doing is run a poll and find out if these people are willing and ready to remain part of this country and If the polls proves otherwise, then you call the head and leader for that group, run elections and give them their independence simple. I see no reason why people have to die for such or why our police and men of the armed forces should be dragged to battle all the time for problems caused by our leaders who fail to listen to the voice of the people who elected them in office. There should be proper cleansing in Nigeria of all past leaders as they have really failed this country. Keeping them in jail will only provoke more ignored youth to come out in their large numbers and fight for the same course for good or bad. Nigerian should start by understanding the word dialogue in such matters and listen to what these people have to say. I can't remember reading any news claiming lost of life's or killings in the east by massob members and yet they provoke them with jail terms and prisons. Why not apply a similar force and archieve results with Book Haram and the Niger Delta militants. Our late president Musa Yar adua's example with the Niger delta region should be an example to other leaders coming into power. I am only 29yrs of age and analysing the situation of this country like this means I have really studied and seen that this country is still a long way from gaining full stability and peace as our leader don't want peace to reign in the country. They say it is only when a mosquito falls on your testicles to suck blood that you will know not all situation is resolved with violence or force.
