Forty-four students at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, have publicly renounced cultism at the weekend.
The students made the renunciation at a religious ceremony organized by the institution’s management and attended by eminent clergymen, staff, and students. In his sermon, the guest clergyman, Rev. Fr. Paul Obayi, urged the students to shun cultism, adding that cultism adds no value to members' lives.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, encouraged the 'born again' cultists and promised them that the institution would look out for them. "Because we have submitted, God has prepared us for the journey ahead," Ahaneku said. "Be assured that the university management is here to protect your interest.” Other top management who attended the renunciation are the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Charles Esimone; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Onyeyili; the Registrar, Barr. C.C Okeke and Dean, Students Affairs, Prof. Ken Nwogu.
UNIZIK Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the event, which is the second of its kind, was aimed at re-dedicating the university community to God.
