Federal Government Summons Indonesian Ambassador Over Execution Of Nigerians

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Aminu Wali, on Sunday in Abuja summoned the Indonesian Ambassadorto register Nigeria’s protest over the execution, by firing squad, of two Nigerians.

A statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Public Communication, Mr Ogbole Amedu-Ode, introduced some twist into the national identity of one of the executed drug convicts. Since December 2014 when president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo approved the execution only one Nigerian was identified in the list of six condemned drugs convicts.

He was Daniel Enemuo (Alias Diarrassoube Mamadou). Now Nigeria claimed Namaona Denis, said to be a Malawian, was also a Nigerian. The foreign affairs ministry identified him as Solomon Okafor, from the eastern part of Nigeria, like Enemuo. The ministry said the Nigerians were executed for drug offense at the Island of Nusakambangu in Cilacap, Central Java Province, in spite of appeals by the Federal Government.

“The executions were carried out despite persistent pleas for clemency made by the federal government, including the National Assembly. The executions had taken place against the grain of the excellent relations that subsist between Nigeria and Indonesia. Thus, the foreign minister has summoned the Indonesian Ambassador to register Nigeria’s protest.

It strongly appealed to the Indonesian authorities to exercise clemency for other 12 Nigerians on the death row in that country.

The statement said the federal government had expressed sympathy and condolences to the families of the deceased.

It also appealed to Nigerians to desist from drug trafficking which attracted capital punishment in Indonesia and in many other countries. It said it would continue to engage the Indonesian authorities to negotiate and conclude a Prisoner Transfer Agreement.
The statement said the agreement might enable other convicted Nigerians to return home to serve their prison terms.

  7. While am not in support of death sentence, but it is pertinent that we should always obey and know that every nation has it laws. What baffles me is that someone will go to a country where they don't tolerate drug trafficking and trade their, risking his life. We should always learn and discourage such.
And also, I think our government foreign relation with other countries is weak, they are not always proactive. This do make other countries not take us serious.
